Lucan Lodge provides a variety of professional services for horses in the Canberra region, including starting and training.

Lucan Lodge horses are trained using kind and consistent methods. The focus of any training or handling is improvement--working towards a calmer, more balanced and more willing horse and rider combination. Horses are schooled according to classical theory, with a focus on educating them mentally and emotionally as much as gymnastically.

Rachael Greaves

Rachael has been working with hyper-reactive and young horses for many years, locally and in the UK. She has wide experience in the equine industry, from veterinary nursing and management to breeding, judging and instructing.

James Moore

James brings an expertise in scientific training for strength, gymnastic and endurance fitness to our organisation, assisting in training program development and application. James is a sensitive and conscientious rider with an excellent way with horses, and applies his knowledge with finesse!

Why 'Lucan'?

Lucan (Marcus Annaeus Lucanus) was a Latin epic poet who lived between 39 and 65 AD, and wrote Pharsalia, a poem about the Roman transition from Republic to Empire under Caesar. The poem was very critical of Caesar, and, by inference, all later Emperors. Lucan was eventually forced to commit suicide by the emperor Nero, one of his former school friends.

Rachael wrote her thesis on Lucan's use of weather and elemental imagery in Pharsalia to promote its theme of 'ekpyrosis', or cataclysm, as relating to the destructive forces of Caesar and Pompey's Civil War. She still has a soft spot for him!
